When you watch runway shows during fashion week and you see a certain design or design detail that you love, do you ever say to yourself, “I wonder how they made that”?

Cascade Circular Ruffles
At the Alaïa show, staged at New York’s Guggenheim Museum on September 6th, one of the themes in the collection was the cascade circular ruffle. Creative Director Pieter Mulier used the cascade circular ruffle, as a flouncy peplum on top of a harem pant, as an asymmetric skirt hanging from the body by a spaghetti strap and layered circular ruffles to create the cutest flouncy miniskirts.

Alaïa’s Creative Director, Pieter Mulier, designed some of the most seductively sheer pieces that were a cross between lingerie and daywear. When working with sheer fabrics you must choose your seam and hem finishes carefully. The following are an assortment of seam and hem finish lessons to choose from when working with your particular type of sheer fabric, whether it’s chiffon, georgette, voile, mesh, net, or other diaphanous material.
